A notan is a Japanese design used in art to demonstrate positive and negative space. 

Positive space is being used where I cut the black square and moved it. The use of negative space is in the white space left on the black square.

My process was first making the paper notan to learn about them, I used my sketchbook and a black square of paper and cut the paper and glued the pieces next to it. Then I moved on to using clip art to create a digital notan. I picked a piece of clipart and a black square and cut it out.
